Smart Trash Bin

Garbage has become a serious problem in many big cities in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. Currently, there are many people who do not know about the garbage problem. They ignore the importance of handling waste in the neighborhood because of the lack of awareness of the community itself. So far, the government has made several efforts to overcome the problem of waste in Jakarta. They have provided public bin with 3 different categories in public places. However, people still do not care and still throw their garbage randomly without considering the category. Researchers designed a prototype from a trash can differentiate garbage by category and can be open-closed automatically with the help of Arduino microcontroller and servo motor. The trash can not be opened if the garbage category attached to the sensor does not match. Researchers are trying to find a way to distinguish objects based on the material.

Based on the site of www.bareconductive.com, the use of electric paint (electric paint) can detect the presence of someone who is up to 300 mm. In addition, these sensors can work in any non-conductive material (glass, wood, plastic, etc.) and other materials. In accordance with the information, the researcher tries to make a simple capacitive sensor which is more economical and has the same function with the electric paint. Researchers also use activated carbon as a substitute for electric paint from bare conductive because it is capable of conducting electric current (researchers use multimeters to measure the magnitude of resistors in electric paints from bare conductive and activated carbon). The result is a bare conductive data obtained 0.72 kohm and on the active carbon of 1.24 kohm. In addition, based on Chand et al. (2005), the activated carbon comprises 85-95% of the carbon and the remainder are hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen and other substances formed from the manufacturing process. Finally, the researcher found that by passing electric current (electric pulse) through microcontroller to the sensor (capacitive sensor), and if someone attach the garbage to the sensor then obtained different data in the form of number. This is because of differences in the ability of objects in conducting electrical current.
Trash of the same category will have almost the same electrical current (range); while waste with different categories will have a significant difference. Through this concept, researchers create sensors that can conduct electrical current, receive electrical current, and send it back to the microcontroller in the form of data. With this data, researchers created a microcontroller program to operate the bin automatically with the help of servo motors (open-closed) and set the range of data to detect organic, inorganic, and metal trash. Then, with the help of the program, the microcontroller can differentiate the waste by material and decide which lid will open. With this product, people are expected to be aware of the importance of waste processing, especially in sorting waste based on category. Furthermore, waste processing will become easier because the garbage has been sorted.
